ACLT Co-Founders Beverley De-Gale OBE and Orin Lewis OBE are reaching out to the community to set an example by donating blood to support NHS Blood & Transplant’s urgent call for more blood donors of Black heritage.

ACLT, an award-winning charity founded 27 years ago, is committed to providing hope to patients living with illnesses requiring a matched donor (stem-cell, blood, organ) to save a life.

Recent figures indicate a record 250 blood donations are needed daily to treat sickle cell disorder, the fastest-growing genetic condition in the UK, showing a significant increase from 150 donations a day five years ago.

Sickle cell affects red blood cells and predominantly impacts individuals with African or Caribbean heritage. Regular blood transfusions and exchanges are vital for patients with sickle cell disorder, emphasizing the importance of subtype compatibility.

A regularly transfused patient with sickle cell disorder requires an average of 100 blood donors annually to stay alive, with approximately 300 babies born with sickle cell disorder each year.

Before your blood donation, remember to eat and drink plenty of water and juices.
