PLIAS Hosts Groundbreaking Summit to Address Domestic Homicide and Violence During 16 Days of Activism

PLIAS Resettlement is set to host a landmark summit in London on 29 November 2024, aimed at confronting the pressing issues of domestic homicide, violence, and justice. The event, titled ‘Breaking the Silence on Domestic Homicide, Violence, and Justice’, takes place during the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a period dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring action to combat violence against women and girls.

In the UK, domestic violence remains a devastating crisis, with a study by Refuge revealing that two women are killed each week by a current or former partner in England and Wales. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for initiatives like the PLIAS summit, which seeks to bring attention to the often-overlooked impacts of domestic violence, particularly on African, Caribbean, and other minoritised women and girls.

Addressing Systemic Barriers

Jacqueline A. Hinds, Chair of the Board of Trustees at PLIAS Resettlement, highlights the critical importance of the summit, stating, “This event is a crucial step in addressing the systemic barriers faced by African, Caribbean, and other minoritised women and girls. It aligns with the global 16 Days of Activism initiative to challenge and change the norms that perpetuate violence.”

Norma Hoyte, Director of PLIAS Resettlement, echoes this sentiment, pointing to the unique challenges faced by these communities. “Cultural stigmas, language barriers, and a deep mistrust of traditional support services often prevent women from accessing the help they desperately need. As a result, they are placed at even greater risk,” says Hoyte.

Disproportionate Impact on Minoritised Women

Research from Refuge has shown that African, Caribbean, and other minoritised women and girls are disproportionately affected by domestic violence and homicide. A lack of culturally appropriate services has exacerbated the issue, leading to many vulnerable individuals falling through the cracks of support systems.

The PLIAS summit aims to tackle these challenges head-on by bringing together stakeholders, policymakers, survivors, advocates, and service providers. This diverse group will engage in open discussions focused on developing actionable strategies to address the crisis and drive meaningful change.

A Call for Justice and Safety

Hinds emphasises the summit’s broader goals: “This summit represents a crucial opportunity to break the silence surrounding domestic violence and homicide and work towards justice and safety for all women.” The event will not only highlight the need for systemic reforms but also seek to empower survivors and provide a platform for their voices.

As the UK continues to grapple with the alarming rates of domestic violence and homicide, this summit stands as a vital step toward ensuring that all women, particularly those from marginalised communities, receive the protection, support, and justice they deserve.
