Juliet Coley is truly remarkable. After serving as a Senior Deputy Headteacher for 21 years, she transitioned to become a black children’s book publisher and is now the proud author of four books.
Born and raised in Hackney, Juliet started her teaching career at a challenging time when African Caribbean children, especially black boys, faced academic struggles. In an under-resourced area in Tottenham, her school grappled with poor examination outcomes.
However, Juliet’s dedication made a transformative impact. As Head of Year, she led her group to achieve 47%, and as Deputy Head with a focus on English, 75% of students attained 5+ A* to C grades, including English and Maths. Juliet’s achievements continued, marked by outstanding ratings from Ofsted and nominations for the Lloyds Bank/TSB Teaching Awards.
Her extensive list of awards, earned through dedication and impact, includes recognition from the Wise Woman in the Community Award, Haringey Council’s Outstanding Award in Education, and the Lord Hastings Integrity Baton Award at the House of Lords.
Notably, Juliet’s commitment extends beyond the classroom. She’s the Chief Trustee for the anti-knife crime charity The Kiyan Prince Foundation, a member of the Hackney Council Accountability Board, a weekly volunteer at a primary school in Hackney, and an Independent Custody Visitor for MOPAC.
Her philanthropic efforts also reach international shores, as she serves as the Patron of a mixed independent school in Accra, Ghana.
In 2019, Juliet spearheaded the award-winning Anti-Gun and Anti-Knife crime campaign ‘Value Life,’ earning The Queen’s Award and recognition from former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Her tireless work as an educator and publisher, supporting young writers, led to her winning the Panache Covid Hero Award in 2019.
Juliet Coley’s journey is not just a professional one; it’s a testament to her unwavering commitment to education, community, and making a lasting impact on the lives of young people.
