Notting Hill Carnival 2024: Your Ultimate Guide

Get ready for one of the biggest street parties in the world as Notting Hill Carnival returns to West London this August bank holiday. Celebrating its 56th year, the carnival promises to be an explosion of color, music, and dance, drawing in over two million people from across the globe.

Dates to Remember: Saturday, 24 August to Monday, 26 August

What to Expect: Notting Hill Carnival is Europe’s largest street party, and it’s famous for its vibrant parade that stretches over three miles (5 km). The festivities are packed with dazzling masquerade performances, infectious soca and calypso rhythms, the rich sounds of steel bands, and booming sound systems that will keep you moving all weekend long.

Carnival Line-Up:

Saturday, 24 August Panorama: The UK’s largest steel pan competition at Emslie Horniman Pleasance Park, 16:00 – 23:00 BST. Watch top bands like Croydon Steel Orchestra, Ebony Steelband (defending champions), Mangrove Steelband, Metronomes Steel Orchestra, and Real Steel battle it out.

Sunday, 25 August Mas Judging Point: The official opening ceremony at Great Western Road at 10:00, with local residents, organizers, and participants kicking off the day’s events.

Children’s Day Parade: A family-friendly parade where children’s masquerade groups take center stage. Dutty Fun Mas Parade: Expect to get messy as this parade features brightly colored paints, powder, and sometimes even melted chocolate.

Sound Systems: If you prefer to stay off the parade route, enjoy a variety of music genres from rare groove to house and samba, playing from 12:00 – 19:00.

Live Stages: Red Bull Selector Stage: Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park, 12:00 – 19:00

Powis Square Stage: Powis Square, 12:00 – 19:00 Monday, 26 August Adult’s Parade: The grand finale!

This is your last chance to see the spectacular costumes and performances before the carnival wraps up.

Sound Systems & Live Stages:

Strawberries & Cream Stage: Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park, 12:00 – 19:00 Powis Square Stage: Powis Square, 12:00 – 19:00

Getting There: Notting Hill’s roads will be closed throughout the weekend, so forget about driving or catching a bus into the area.

Tube stations close to the carnival, like Notting Hill Gate, will also be shut or exit-only for much of the day.

Arrive early—before 11:00—to avoid closures, as some stations may reopen after 15:00 or 18:00.

Be prepared to walk up to 30 minutes to find an open Tube station if you leave before these times.

Note that there will be no interchange between the Circle and District lines and the Central line on both days.

Tickets & Safety: The carnival is free for everyone, but expect heavy police presence for crowd control. Certain areas may be off-limits at peak times, so if you have mobility issues or anxiety in large crowds, it’s best to arrive early and leave early.

There will be a safe space for women and girls, staffed by specially trained professionals in collaboration with the Met Police and the charity Safer Spaces.

To stay safe, remember to:

  • Move with the flow of the crowd.
  • Set a meeting place with friends or family in case you get separated.
  • Keep your belongings secure.
  • Plan your journey in advance. Use the dedicated Transport for London (TfL) website for the best travel routes.
