The streets of Notting Hill echoed with vibrant Caribbean rhythms and the magnetic charisma of Grammy Award-winning sensation, Shaggy. Performing on Sunday, August 27th at the Notting Hill Carnival, he graced the Saxon, Rampage, and Horniman stages, reviving the energy and passion that UK fans have cherished for decades.
VP Records highlighted the significance of the UK fanbase in Shaggy’s phenomenal career, as he enthralled the audience with both his classics and fresh tunes. Attendees swayed to his iconic “It Wasn’t Me,” and were introduced to the infectious beats of “Mood” from his latest EP, In The Mood. The surprise of the day was Kes, who delighted fans by performing Shabba Ranks’ “Ting A Ling”.
For Shaggy, known as Mr. Boombastic, the event was a homecoming of sorts. Speaking to the Mirror, he shared,
“Today has been fantastic. Notting Hill Carnival never disappoints. Touching bases with Rampage and Horniman was exhilarating. But, the legendary Saxon sound system was a nostalgic journey. Having grown up with its beats, connecting with the crowd there felt personal. Big shoutout to Musclehead for the amazing energy. Truly, today was all about getting back into the mood and savoring every moment.”
It’s been 30 years since Shaggy, whose birth name is Orville Burrell, stormed the UK music scene with his debut single, “Oh Carolina” from the album Pure Pleasure.
Reflecting on his three-decade-long journey, Shaggy remarked,
“The Notting Hill Carnival embodies the essence of Caribbean culture. Three decades post releasing ‘Oh Carolina’, this was my chance to embrace the roots where my journey began. My new EP captures the essence of community, celebration, and the rich tapestry of dancehall, soca, reggae, and contemporary dance music.”
“Oh Carolina” etched history by becoming the artist’s first song to clinch the No. 1 spot on the UK Singles chart and reached No. 59 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
In recent achievements, Shaggy’s track, “Hey Sexy Lady,” crossed the 100 million streams milestone on Spotify.
Additionally, on August 19th, the Jamaica Independence Gala in New York celebrated Shaggy, recognizing him as an international cultural icon for his contributions to reggae music and philanthropy.
